I don’t play video games often anymore, but one I enjoyed playing and found particularly inspiring was Destiny - a game in which you protect humanity by fighting off alien invaders and collecting glowing dodecahedrons called Engrams. These provide equipment with a random rarity (indicated by the engram’s color). I wanted to bring this artifact from that world into mine.

The idea for this came about while tinkering with an Arduino during a vacation. Within an hour I had a functional prototype: shake the device and it randomly selects one of the five Engram colors (white, green, blue, purple, and gold, in order of rarity) and briefly glows the color, similar to a magic 8 ball toy.
